#PiastriGate has finally concluded with the confirmation that F2 Champion Oscar Piastri is to drive for McLaren in the 2023 and 2024 season.

The FIA has released a statement confirming that the Contract Recognition Board has recognised the contract between McLaren and Piastri by a ‘Unanimous Decision’. This signifies that BWT Alpine did not have a contract with the Australian driver for the 2023 season, like previously claimed by the team principal Otmar Szafnauer.

The CRB decision upholds the claims that Piastri made in his now infamous tweet that he will not be racing for the Enstone-based team next year.

In a statement by McLaren, they have confirmed that the 2021 F2 Champion has signed a multi-year contract with the team and that they believe ‘he will be able to help [them] move another step forward with their ambitions’.

The statement also included a statement from Piastri who stated that he is ‘extremely excited to be making [his] F1 debut with such a prestigious team’ and is currently focused on preparing for his debut with the Woking-based team.

Meanwhile, Alpine have released a statement that they ‘acknowledge the decision [the CRB has] made’ and they ‘consider the matter closed’.

With Piastri now confirmed at McLaren next year, who will take Alonso’s place at Alpine? Let us know in the comments below.
